The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says they are now investigating the death of a 14 year old Marange girl who allegedly died whilst giving birth at a church shrine in Marange, Manicaland Province.
The ZRP made the announcement following pressure from human and women rights organisations who were advocating for justice for the poor girl who was deprived of her rights to get hospitalisation because of denomination beliefs.
It is believed that the deceased, Memory Machaya belonged to a Johanne Marange apostolic sect, a shrine that forbids it’s members from accessing medical aid.
In a statement, the ZRP said they are now investigating the case.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of of print and social media reports and enquiries on the alleged death of Memory Machaya (14) at a church shrine in Marange recently.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is now conducting investigations into the case. More information will be released soon.” He said.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana condemned child abuse and urged Zimbabweans not to normalise the crime.
“No place for paedophiles in our country and let’s not normalize the crude behavior which takes away the innocence of our children, damages their future and as in this case, kills them.” Mangwana posted on his twitter handle.
It was also reported that the minor was raped but the matter was never reported to the police.
