Former Manchester City and Jomo Cosmos striker, Benjani Mwaruwari has been appointed as new assistant coach of Zimbabwe.
Recently, warriors announced their squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia.
The squad announcement was paired with an Executive Committee meeting of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) on Tuesday.
During the meeting ZIFA decided to appoint former Zimbabwean international Mwaruwari as their new assistant with immediate effect.
“The Executive Committee received a progress report from the Technical and Development Committee with regards to all matches played in 2021. The EXCO resolved that the technical teams will remain unchanged,” reads a statement from ZIFA. “The EXCO further resolved to augment the Warriors’ technical team by appointing Benjani Mwaruwari as an Assistant Coach. The appointment is with immediate effect.”
Mwaruwari, who featured 42 times during his career for Zimbabwe, will join head coach Zdravko Logarusic on the sidelines going forward.
Many South African football fans will still remember Mwaruwari from his time with Jomo Cosmos in the early stages of his career, when he was named PSL Player of the Season in 2001. However, he gained legend status following stints at Grasshoppers, Auxerre, Portsmouth and Manchester City. He also played for Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers before finishing his career in South Africa with Chippa United and Bidvest Wits.
