Police Warns Journalists

The Zimbabwe Republic Police {ZRP} has warned journalists against inappropriately reporting on the status of police officers.

In a statement yesterday, ZRP encouraged members of the media to verify correct information about police ranks before publishing stories.

The police also highlighted some police ranks that journalists should use when reporting issues to do with the police force.

“The police have noted with concern recent media reports on alleged commission of misdemeanor or suspected criminal acts by some police officers.

“In some of the cases, media has been awash with headlines titled “Top Cop Arrested, Senior Police Officer nabbed or Police Commander nailed.

“ZRP wishes to set the record straight and reiterate that senior officers in the ZRP are of the rank of superintended and above junior members of the rank of Chief Inspector and below.

“We urge the media to verify the correct status of members suspected to have committed a crime before publication or broadcast as most ranks being quoted are not correct,” reads the statement.

The ZRP warning comes after the media sometimes report stories about the police without clearly mentioning their ranks.
