The Zimbabwe Republic Police {ZRP} has sent an important message to motorists and travelers concerning the upcoming Easter holidays.
Easter holidays are always marred with horrific road accidents that emanates from speeding, human error, and outright recklessness.
In 2021, police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said 231 accidents were recorded across the country during the Easter holiday period which marked an increase from 178 in 2020.
The number of people killed in 2021 also rose from eight in 2020 to 26 while injuries increased from 22 to 149.
In a statement ZRP Commissioner-General, Godwin Matanga urged motorists to be cautious on the road at this year’s Easter holidays.
“Travellers are implored to be alert and avoid being overexcited, especially motorists on the roads. Drivers should set a good example by exhibiting conduct that promotes road safety at all times.
“In this regard, motorists should avoid overtaking in situations that are not safe to do so or speeding thereby contributing to the road carnage normally experienced during holidays,” he said.
He warned drivers to observe road rules.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will certainly impound all unroadworthy vehicles and arrest all drivers who will be under the influence of alcohol.
“Public service vehicles should carry the load which is commensurate with their capacity and ensure vehicles are roadworthy to travel from one point to another,” added Matanga.
This year’s Easter holiday will run from 15 to 18 April.
