The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced that the number of people perished due to road accidents during the Easter and Independence holidays this year rose to 73 from 24 recorded last year.
In a statement this afternoon, ZRP national spokesperson, Assistance Commissioner, Paul Nyathi said most of the accidents were due to recklessness and urged motorists to always remain cautious on the roads.
“A comprehensive analysis by the Police has reviewed that most of these accidents are attributed to human error, which includes speeding, inattention, misjudgment, overtaking error, and failure to observe road rules and regulations by drivers.
“Most serious accidents occurred during the night where most travellers were observed to be moving in large numbers, ignoring safety measures and overloaded vehicles especially those who intended to go to public gatherings for Easter commemorations.” Said Nyathi.
According to the police report, the total number of road traffic accidents this year was 264 compared to the 401 recorded last year. The total number of fatal road accidents this year was 32 compared to the 22 recorded last year and the number of people injured was 202 compared to the 117 which was recorded last year during the Easter holidays.
