Mpumalanga police are investigating a “bizarre” case in which two people were spotted allegedly attempting to dig up a body.
On Wednesday, some residents of Masoyi, outside White River, noticed the two digging up a grave in the Jerusalem graveyard during the early hours of the morning, said police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.
The locals had gone to the cemetery to prepare for a funeral when they saw the two people, who immediately fled when they were seen.
“The suspects were disturbed as they were attempting to exhume the body of a man who was buried a few weeks back,” Mohlala said.
“A case with regard to a violation of a corpse has been opened and is under investigation.”
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that the two suspects had left behind a panga, a spade, and a bag “with some items which looked like muthi inside”.
Mohlala said that police had found the dug-up “grave of a man who was buried on 23 November 2022 at the age of 19”, but that “the suspects failed to bring the body to the surface”.
He said, “His family was then summoned and they are in a process to determine whether his body parts are complete.”
Mohlala added that police had not ruled out the possibility that the incident was related to “practices of a certain cult”.
No arrests have been made yet.
