CCC Sounds Alarm Bells On Human Rights Situation In The Country

The Nelson Chamisa led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has raised concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe, calling the Human Rights Commission to take action.

In a press release, party spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi said Zimbabwe has continued to witness the harassment of opposition members and human rights activists by the President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Government.

“The Citizens Coalition for Change is gravely concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe. In build up to, during and after the August 2023 elections, Zimbabwe witnessed an unrelenting deterioration of human rights, a situation marked by an escalation in political violence and human intimidation of human rights activists, opposition officials, arson, selective application of the law , blatant impunity, internal and external displacements and murder,” said Mkwananzi.

Mkwananzi said this had put the nation into disrepute, being portrayed as one of the worst performing countries in the world in terms human rights protection.

“Equally, the Human  Rights Watch released its world report in Johannesburg detailing human rights abuses that occurred in over 100 countries countries in 2023, ranking Zimbabwe as one of the worst performing countries in terms of human rights protection in the region,” he said.

The CCC Spokesperson said the Human Rights Commission and other relevant stakeholders should take action in promoting human rights protection and put Zimbabwe in a better democratic standing.

“The Citizens for Change therefore calls on the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission to exercise its independent mandate as enshrined in the national constitution without fear, favor and prejudice.  In addition, the party calls all human rights, local and international, to apply pressure on the Zimbabwean government to observe and protect human rights in accordance with the countries laws and constitution and to all human rights treaties to which Zimbabwe is a signatory,” said Mkwananzi
