Tatenda Masunda (24) from Shurugwi has been charged with murder after he allegedly poisoned his 3-month-old stepdaughter with a gold-purification substance.
The prosecution alleges that on November 3, Masunda ordered the mother to leave the infant behind as she was going to do laundry at a nearby borehole.
After the mother left Masunda allegedly retrieved a poisonous gold-purification substance he had hidden in the yard and fed it to the infant.
“The accused later brought the visibly distressed and crying infant to the mother. The mother rushed the infant to Zvamabande Hospital. She was referred to Shurugwi District Hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead upon arrival”, said the prosecution.
Masunda fled to Chegutu but was apprehended on November 5.
He was remanded in custody until November 21 pending investigations.
