Police in Harare have launched a manhunt for a man accused of raping a subordinate in 2020 when she worked under him as a graduate trainee.

The alleged victim finally summed up the courage to report the abuse, five years after the offence.

According to a report she made to the police, the alleged victim was employed as an intern at a company that the suspect was her immediate supervisor. Its alleged that the suspect approached the alleged victim with a love proposal in September 2020, but she turned down his advances.

Its alleged that this rejection stung the suspect and he didn’t take it like a gentleman, as he reportedly threatened her with loss of employment if she didn’t accept his proposal.

After continued threats of employment termination, the alleged victim reluctantly acceded to the proposal under duress.

On the day the first offence is alleged to have been committed, its reported that on an unknown date in December 2020, the suspect gave a lift to the complainant after work and when they reached Eastlea suburb, the suspect pulled off the road and asked the complainant why she didn’t want to sleep with him.

Moments later, it is alleged that the suspect removed the complainant’s intern’s pants and had sex with her once without protection or consent. After the act he allegedly drove to the Harare CBD and dumped her along Julius Nyerere way.

Its also alleged that sometime in the year 2021, the suspect took the victim to his pharmacy and raped her once without protection or consent.

ZRP Harare provincial spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and said they have not yet arrested the man.

“Complainant and the accused persons were workmates. Accused was the complainant’s immediate supervisor, since she was working as a graduate trainee on a contract basis. On an unknown date in September 2020 in the morning, the complainant was at work when she was approached by the accused who proposed to her and threatened that she might lose her job if she rejected his proposal.

“Complainant accepted the proposal under duress. On an unknown date in December 2020 in the afternoon, the accused person and complainant knocked off duty. Accused offered a ride to the complainant. As they were at corner Chiremba Road and Robert Mugabe Way in Eastlea, the accused pulled his motor vehicle off the road. Accused then started shouting at the complainant, asking her why she was refusing to have sex with him.

“The accused went on to remove the complainant’s pants, and had unprotected sexual intercourse with her once without her consent. The accused person then drove his motor vehicle into Harare CBD and dumped the complainant along Julius Nyerere. On an unknown date in 2021, the accused took the complainant to his pharmacy and had sexual intercourse once without protection and consent. The police attended the scene and no arrest was made yet,” said Chakanza.
