Mozambique’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho on Tuesday marked the end of Zimbabwe’s senior women’s football team’s journey at the 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament.
Mozambique qualified for the semi-finals by surpassing Zimbabwe to the top of Group D with four points.
Of the two group games they played, Mighty Warriors only managed one win (3-0) against Lesotho on Sunday, unfortunately, it came at the back of a 1-0 defeat against Mozambique in their first game played last week Thursday.
Only the top team from each of the four groups progressed to the semi-finals and Mozambique will now face hosts South Africa who finished on top of Group A, while the other semi-final fixture will be between Zambia and defending champions Malawi.
Zimbabwe picked a young squad for the COSAFA Cup tournament, leaving out other senior players like Israel-based forward Immaculate Msipa and Tanzanian-based midfielder Dananai Bhobho.
For team head coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda, the tournament was also meant to give exposure to the youngsters ahead of the AFCON Qualifiers coming next year.
The Mighty Warriors are expected to arrive in the country on Wednesday afternoon at Robert Mugabe International Airport after a spending week in South Africa.
COSAFA Cup tournament marked the team’s first grouping this year and was Kwinji 15’s debut competition in charge since her appointment in September.
Zimbabwe boast of one COSAFA Cup trophy which was won in 2011 when the tournament was hosted on home soil.
