The Mashonaland West Province has been the worst province in the country to be affected by veld fires.
This was confirmed by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon Mary Mliswa Chikoka during the launch of the national fire season week at Gwebi Agriculture College yesterday.
Minister Chikoka said the fires destroyed wildlife, property and even human lives.
“Over the years, some of our districts for instance, Hurungwe, Zvimba and Makonde had been greatly affected by uncontrolled veld fires. Wildlife, property and in worst case scenarios, human lives have not been spared either.” She said.
The Minister urged the community to always be on guard against veld fires as the country should not continue to lose lives.
“The war against unmonitored and uncontrolled veld fires must be won at all cost. We may not continue to lose valuable resources and properties to veld fires. That we say no to.
“It takes you and me to be responsible regarding the issues of fire so that we don’t continue to lose lives.” Minister Chikoka said.
The country is expecting a bumper harvest due to the normal rains that fell during the 2020-21 agricultural season. The Minister therefore urged the community to take measures so that they don’t lose their harvest to veld fires.
“There is therefore need for precautionary measures to secure our crops, properties and farms against veld fires.”
“Zvakakosha kuti tiremekedze zvirimwa zvedu.” She added in vernacular.
“Through Unity of purpose, determination and commitment as provinces and indeed the country. We can surely win the war against veld fires.” Minister Chikoka said.
Also present during the launch was Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon N.M Ndhlovu, Senator Chief Siansali, Chief Beperere, Member of Parliament for Zvimba East, Hon T Tungamirai and Chief Zvimba among other dignitaries.
