Football Legendary George ‘ Mastermind’ Shaya Dies

Legendary George ‘ Mastermind’ Shaya has died.

He was 77.

Shaya a five time Soccer Star of the year, has been unwell for sometime since suffering dementia in 2014. In 2019 he had his left leg amputated after suffering from diabetes.

Shaya ruled the roost in local football from the late 1960s up into the 1970s playing for Dynamos winning the Soccer Star of the year awards in 1969, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1977.

He later went to South Africa where he played for Moroka Swallows. Shaya captained the Rhodesia national team at just 21.

He was the Dynamos chairman when they reached the African Champions League final in 1998.

Shaya is regarded as the finest player to play in the local league.

He is survived by his wife Agnes.

Shaya’s death follows that of other football greats this year, Highlanders legend Enerst ‘ Maphepha’ Sibanda, Caps United’s Joe ‘Kode’Mugabe, Steve ‘Dude’ Kwashi, Misheck ‘Scania’Chidzambwa and David’Yogi’Mandigora.
