Only 2 bodies out of more than 30 that were trapped underground last week in Bindura’s Ran mine were finally retrieved yesterday.
Rescue teams have been trying to retrieve the bodies of the illegal miners for seven days now but the efforts are proving to be abortive. One of the rescuers also perished when he fell into the shafts and drowned.
According to an eye witness at the scene, the water is still being pumped out of the shafts; the shafts were so deep to about 500 meters, so as it stands, only two bodies have been retrieved.
The collapse was triggered by the blasting of a support pillar in an area, which was flooded, resulting in the roof of the shaft giving in on Wednesday killing illegal miners, passersby and vendors.
