Labode Calls On Churches To Encourage Their Members To Get Vaccinated

Religious leaders and churches has been urged to encourage and influence the public about the positive sides of vaccination program.

Speaking at the Transparency Zimbabwe International event on Transparency and Accountability issues around the Covid 19 roll out plan held at Holiday Inn Hotel today in Harare, Honorable Ruth Labode, a member of parliament, said religious leaders must use their influence and power to encourage and educate their members about the merits of the Covid 19 vaccination programme.

“Religious leaders are very powerful, I have been talking to religious leaders telling them that they are very powerful. Do you know how many people will stand up in church when a prophet says its time for healing come forward and he goes and say you are healed , that is the power which we can actually use.” Said Labode.

The MP acknowledged that there were some religious leaders who she said were against the vaccination initiative, but insisted that progress had been made because there were other churches that are supportive of the initiative regionally and at national level.

“Yes l know some religious leaders are against vaccinations but we held a meeting with the Christian council were we discussed the issue.” She said

Labode continued and said, “there is an issue that l know about TB Joshua where he encouraged people to go and get vaccinated on his Emmanuel TV channel which has 1.4million subscribers. He has gone to encourage his followers to go and get vaccinated. He said God has given you a grace. That is the only language we need here right now because people believe in the prophets.”

She also urged Civic Society and the media to inform and educate the people about the Covid 19 vaccination program as well as indicating that the issue of vaccination is a voluntary offer.

“This thing must not be a forced matter. Media and Civic Society Organizations go out there and inform the people.” she added.

The Transparency and Accountability event on the vaccine roll out program was centered on the need for clarity and awareness on how the government is progressing to the phase 2 stage of the vaccination program.
